lhm leak rear cylinder

Post by pwykes »

Hi.
I have bx 19 rd which is leaking very slowly from the nearside rear cylinder. It is not coming from the sphere seal or the pipe and union or the rubber boot. The fluid is appearing
between the subframe mounting and the cylinder where they mate together.Does any body Know if the cylinder body is one complete unit or is it made up of two parts?
Also it appears that these cylinders are becoming rare as i cannot find one on the net.
Thanks Phil.

yep that's is a common problem and yes the cylinder body is one piece and it is removed forward out of the sub frame,

there will be corrosion between the steel sub frame and the alloy cylinder, it rots a hole through the cylinder wall,

your will only be sort of holding as there will be a build up of dirt between the sub frame and cylinder,

normaly when the suspension is depressurized the cylinder should float about in the sub frame, and should only become rigid when the system is up and working,

to how long it will continue to hold is anyone's guess,

think of this there is 2,500 psi in the system when pressurized,

i think someone on hear said you can machine XANT cylinders to fit a BX,

i suppose a time will come were BX'ers will have the original cylinders welded up and machined internally,

or board out and sleeved,

Thanks Malcolm.

There`s a citroen specialist close by, i will see if he as any ideas regarding parts.Might be time for it to come off the road for a while and let it relax as a nearly classic.Just made its 25th birthday.

cheers Phil.
