Drip investigation

Post by kiwi »

Yesterday on a long haul the red warning light of the LHM flickered on several times the first couple of times was on corners and more obvious on a very steep down hill. My quick look under the vehicle noticed some drips appearing around the sump area, combined with the black gunk it was not obvious and I could not work out if it was a LHM leak.

Today on further investigation on ramps discoverd some green spots which now turn out to be coolant from the hose that goes into the water pump housing. So my LHM leakage remains a mystery if anything, nothing obvious other than the typical seepage around the FDV. Put one bit of panic to bed to be replaced with a worse one, does anyone know the part number of that hose on a Diesel and if still available? Not lost to much water yet but the antifreeze shows it is definately got a leak.

Not sure which hose you need but I had the FDV drips for ages - probably 18 months - that would leak a little and need topping up every 4 or 6 weeks - lived with it and just replaced the FDV with a reconditioned one when it dripped a little too much for the MOT [-X

Few years ago I rebuilt a FDV for the 19TZS that does not leak anymore and the weepage from the FDV is so slight it is not noticeable. But given I have done about 10,000 miles since I got this BX and not touched the LHM thats not so bad.

More of a worry seeing the other green stuff leaking out of the join at the point it joins the water pump. I do have a concern about this given it was replaced 8,000 miles ago by a Garage whose track record on recent repairs has gone down. The thought has crossed my mind that the casing could be damaged :(

OK we are going a bit off track with the suspect.

I noticed a bit of collant in the vicinity of the water pump where the hose joins the water pump. Either it is a stuffed water pump or it is a perished hose. Now a reason for asking about the water pump is I noticed it is leaking back through the over flow (no expansion tank on the TXD) after I topped it up. If the water pump is failing would this point to it failing?

Seems premature to fail given it was fitted 6 months ago and 6000 miles ago?
