My latest BX that had been really neglected had very heavy steering until it had warmed up a bit and slow to rise if at all - Filter clean and fresh hydraflush and it's a huge amount better - tiny bit of steering stiffness when you first start but fine after that - before it would come on and off, very disconcerting and definitely an MOT failure...

/\ That reminds me - when I bought mine I had the same intermittent problem. One of the first things I did was change the LHM and clean the filters as I suspected a bit of neglect, and as soon as I had done that the problem disappeared for about 80k miles. The filters were fairly dirty so assume that was the cause of the problem. When I next suffered power steering loss it was only during cold weather, and was cured by a new pump.

It was once suggested to me by an employee of Total fluids, that LHM looses its stretchiness (polymer type chains break down making the fluid thinner) in as little as 6000 miles! I'm not changing mine that often though.

Really, i've never seen that before. I did question the Total man when he said 6k, to which i was told do what Citroen say and wouldn't speak to me any more :D

It doesn't take a chemist to realise that if you push chains of material through such small and turbulent holes under that sort of pressure, that they are going to break up. Its part of the reason cars stay up longer after a fluid change, but it doesn't last long.

i thought the reason they stay up after fluid change was due to the air would have been freshly bled,
