Changing a Steering Axial Joint

Post by hvanman »

While changing the sub frame I also fitted a spare rack. Now it's all connected up I can tell there is play in the O/S axial joint of the rack. I've had a quick look at the old rack, but can't work out how you would go about changing the axial joint, could anyone offer some advice?

Thanks, Simon

One of these?

undo the ball joint nut and split the ball joint, go to the other end of the track rod, undo the lock nut half a turn then unscrew the rod to remove, refit in reverse order?

No, the axial joint which is on the end of the rack itself that the track rod screws onto. (O/S)

whip the TRE off completely, then remove the gaitor. You'll then see the axial joint. It just screws into the rack. Access is a bit of a ballache, but a small set of stilsons will undo it no rpoblem, thats how I do them anyhow..
It'll be tight / loose for a couple of turns due to the spring washer that keeps it tight, then it should unwind by hand.

As Haynes says, re-assembly is a reveral of removal!
