Stop light on - any ideas?

Post by Paul296 »

I went to turn the Hurricane over this evening but the battery was flat (I'd left an interior light on - whoops!). I couldn't get the car out of the drive to jump it from the TGD so, as I happened to have a new battery, I stuck that on it. It sparked up fine (including the errant interior light) except the central stop light is now permanently on, along with the coolant warning lamp - the one with the wiggly lines. I had a look at the coolant level but it's fine. Any ideas?

Coolant level sensor would be a first suspect - I've never had issues myself (maybe the TDs had a more robust sensor?) but heard of others with sensor problems. Not sure if simply unplugging (to prove/disprove it) it would leave the light on though.

yeah that ^

Try cleaning the connections on the little black box that hangs off the driver's side of the rad, this is the electronics for the coolent level sensor.

Thanks, that makes sense. I had some problems with the sensor before. The lights that are on are the ones with a tick not the ones with a cross - still the sensor? I was a bit worried that someone was going to tell me that my head gasket had just hitched a ride on the last freedom loaded moped to shagged city! :(

with the car on its roof i think most of the fluid level warning lamps would be on

My 19TZD did the same thing, was just corrosion on the switch terminals...

The lights that are on are the ones with a tick
Definitely the sensor box or connections thereto / from etc...
this is the electronics for the coolent level sensor.
and I've taken mine apart - as you do - and I started to trace out the circuit - which seems to be way over the top / bordering on unnecessary - I gave up in the end - does anybody have the cct diagram or further info on exactly what this widget does ?

Presumably the sensor is on the header tank? I think I might have given it a whack when fitting the new battery? Arse!! #-o

Ah. I'd misread your first post as having happened to the TGD. Pretty sure that simply disconnecting the plug on the bottom of the header tank will turn the light on, so worth a check first.
