hot / cold knob failure

Post by Mickey taker »

the heater hot/cold knob has gone floppy.
I decided to get all brave and have a look,
the outer cable has come out of its clip, has anyone heard of the inner cables seizing in the outer ?
The reason I ask is the inner and outer cable "seem " to be moving as one or it may be an illusion due to the outer cable not being clipped in place.
I dont want to clip it back in only for it to ping out again.
I do have spare cables and clips but my fat hands cant get to the heater end of the cable so will have to get a skinny mate to do it for me

which end has the clip come out at?

I did think it was a bit short when we put it in, but having done mine several times, i think yours is longer than average ;)

It will move as one until you clip it back on to stop the outer moving, I've not heard of the heater cables siezing up.

In my experience the cable coming off at the dash end is a symptom, not the problem itself. Reconnect it and it'll just happen again. It's probably the heater valve at the other end of the cable stiffening up, especially if the car's been treated with radweld or similar. So you turn the knob, it puts a strain on the cable which then pops out and/or bends. I've also had one which kept doing this even after I'd stripped and rebuilt the tap - that turned out to be the cable support at the tap end having distorted slightly so the linkage caught on part of the casing. A sod to get at, but sorted it in the end.

Vanny replaced the heater tap a little while ago and I flushed the whole system through so hopefully its a one off

I'd still be inclined to check at the tap end to make sure everything moves as it should. Otherwise you'll end up bending the cable when it's trying to push the tap closed, and once the cable's bent, it'll keep bending.
