TZD Turbo down on power (not set up correctly?)

Post by ghaddon1701 »

Hi everybody,
I always thought my TZD went ok. It is certianly more powerful than Xantia turbo diesels I have been in, except of course for HDI 110's. Mine has always had quite alot of turbo lag. But when you keep the revs up it buzzes along quite nicely. Or so I thought. For reference my car has Lucas pump and a KKK turbo.

I drove another TZD today(with a Lucas pump) don't know which turbo. It had three of us in the car. From 2000 revs the turbo came in very suddenly and pulled very strongly, quite a bit better than mine when only I am in it, let alone three. Things of note were the turbo whistle was much more pronounced on the one I drove today than mine. You can hear the turbo on mine but you have to listen for it. Then turbo on mine definately does something because you can feel it come in. However the power does not come on as soon as the turbo starts whistling. The little bit of surge I get usually starts at about 2500-2750rpm.

I have wondered in the past if the boost compensator on the injection pump is faulty or not quite working properly. I think you can buy replacement compensators for about £90. But I assume its an awkward job to do. Pump stripped etc? I have removed the pipe from the intercooler to the pump before now to see what difference it made. It was completely gutless then so the compensator is definately doing something.

I realise this issue has come up before I was just wondering if the mechanics among you have any suggestions. Thanks.

Regards Graham

Aside from possible faults with yours, you could bear in mind that this other one you drove could have had the turbo dialled up. Equally, yours could have had the fuel turned down. Worth considering.
I have zero patience for your tedium.

In my experience of playing about with turbo's and trying to powertune my XUD to silly horsepower I always found that garrett turbo's spool up and provide boost much lower down the rev range and keep it going to far nearer the red line the KKK could manage.

Easiest place to start would be to get a boost guage on the turbo and see what it's putting out, KKK's can get sticky wastegates, and indeed, whose to say whats been done to the pump or the turbo in the past.
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

I had problem with my first Bx TZD turbo being gutless. I took it to a diesel injection specialist- they changed the rubber diaphragm part of the sensor in the overboost module and it was like a rocket after that in comparison. I've driven a couple of others and it was definitely faster than those. I miss it, especially with fuel prices being what they are.
