BX Petrol distributor lead

Post by Tim Leech »

Please forgive my poor description, the Dizzy on the GT has a power lead running from the loom to the distributor body, its been bodged up with insulating tape and the wires have been pulled from the dizzy end and are starting to come away. Today the rev counter on the GT was flickering shortly before the engine cut, a bit of wire waggling and all was well but it needs replacing.

Anyone?

I presume you don't mean the HT lead running from the coil to the distributor body. It could be the pick up lead to the tacho, which IIRC works by picking up the magnetic pulse from the dizzy to give you the rpm readout. Or I could be completely wrong.

It did affect to tacho but also caused the engine to die.

Sounds like the low tension lead - assuming this car has points (or electronic equivalent), a break in this wire would do what you describe. I'd check any connections on or in the dizzy, but it should be an easy enough job to splice in a new section.

I bought a distributor at the icccr which at the the time i thought must be off a mk1 because it had a lead on it. I only wanted the vacuum advance, i'll see if i've still got the lead and if it's the right one.
