Hello
Passenger side front window is doing neither of its usual movements. If the button is pressed for up
there is a slight motor whir. Down results in nothing.
Before I whip it all apart, any ideas what it's likely to be? Window is solid in the closed position, no movement or looseness.
Many thanks.
Window not going up (or down).

Same result with either switch? The motors do stick up with time, especially if not used very often. Managed to strip, re-grease and re-assemble one on my Range Rover. Going to be a door card off job either way - that'll let you check the wiring too and make sure power is actually getting to it with the button pressed. My first suspect would be wiring I think and that saves having to try and dismantle the mechanism.

Re: Window not going up (or down).
My first guess would be wiring - If working OK from one switch but not the other I'd wiggle the wire to the door from which it does not operate. If this does not sort it I'd suspect the switch next, which you can prove by substitution.
If the switch is at fault it's probably dirty contacts as they do arc in use. They can usually be cured by popping off the rocker and spraying with contact cleaner. (Avoid WD40 type sprays, as they will leave a residue which can make things worse over time).

Yes, same with both switches, which to me rules out switch?
Definitely time for a multi meter (Holly has just started her PGCE in secondary Design Tech so has been doing loads of electronics, so she can do it!).
Can I check the feed is getting there at all without removing the door card? Presumably all the windows are on one fuse?
Cheers.

Sounds like a failed motor, had a couple fail with no warning before.
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....

Why would it fail in one direction though?
I think the front and rear windows are on separate fuses, so if the driver's side is OK it's not that. Door card off time I'm afraid!

Aye. Not too bad a job. Finding the break in the wire might yet be tricky. Have you tried wiggling the flexi-section between door and body while you press the button?

I can't see how that could be the problem though if not working from either switch. The flexible conduit contains the 12V supply feeding the passenger switch, and also the switched feed to the motor from the passenger window driver's switch. The chances of both failing at the same time are fairly slim, but I suppose not impossible!

Re: Window not going up (or down).
mine did this. one of the wires in the drivers door had failed in the bellow between door and A pillar. Wouldn't work from either switch..
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!
