I assume that the plate that is squished protects the strut from knocks etc.

Due to the angle and lack of lever space I can't straighten the plate, which was to be the first part of the job. What I can do it cut it out,
hammer it straight and then weld it back on. Is this a bad idea?

Can't see any problems with that!

Excellent. I'll give it a go.

I've only got an arc welder, should be sufficient?

Arc welder should be fine for this work - it's the bodywork they struggle with.

Yeah, a bit unpredictable/hard to control I imagine.

It's only two lines of weld, each less than two cms, so should be doable. Now to see if there
is a cutting disc for the angle grinder around, or maybe just a hacksaw. Hmmm....

Would have thought it would take ages with a hacksaw, so angle grinder would be best. Just make sure your head is out of line with it - I was once cutting in a similar position, laid on my back when the grinder jammed in the cut and flew out of my hands. It hit me in the face, but fortunately with the rear side of it instead of the still spinning disc, so I got away with a bruised lip and chipped tooth...

I'll try the grinder then! But with caution.

Sounds like you had one of those "that was really lucky, I'm alive!" moments that seem to happen far too frequently with me. (Took my fixed gear bike frame to be powder coated yesterday only to have a call ten minutes later telling me they'd found a crack almost the entire way round the downtube. It was subtle, but would definitely have left me with no headtube in the near very future).

im sure there are ways to bend this section back without resorting to drastic measures like cutting and welding,

There is if you can get the car high enough to get the proper leaverage, but you have to be careful what you lever against

I'd like to think so too, but all I've got is a pair of axle stands. I'm all for a bit of levering, but short of digging an impromptu inspection pit it's a bit tricky. Does seem like a bit of a palaver to bit cutting it out though. Hmm.

i recon with the car on high place a bar through from the back end, over the top of the bent section towards to front with the tip resting on the edge of the suspension arm, just below were the push rod seat's,
this way you shouldnt require the car to be up in the air appart from on high

Thanks Malcolm, that would work, but the problem is the plate is bent the other way.

Brian, amazing, I knew this must have happened before! Thanks for your method, now to
find a decent bit of angle with an appropriate hole. Task for the day!
