driveshaft interchange..

Post by themildbunch »

Sorry of this has been asked before but I have a very clicky RH driveshaft on my 1.9 Diesel Auto... I also have an AMK remanufactured TD driveshaft and ebay also has cheaper TD RH shafts... but no n/a RH shaft.

Apart from the ABS splines and the stronger construction are these shafts the same as for the n/a diesels?

I need to replace the lower engine mount too so I might as well do all this at the same time...

Does the whole shaft need replacing, or is it just the outer CV joint, as these are readily available.

As for complete shafts, as the same basic type of box was fitted to both engines I can't see why you can't fit a turbo drive shaft.

To get the mount changed I really need to get the shaft out and bracket off so I thought I may as well do the whole shaft given the low prices... I'm shure the intermediate bearing is quite noisy too...

Just need to get a 3/4" breaker bar.

Yes, it will fit. My breaker bar is only a 1/2" drive but has coped with all driveshafts so far, including those requiring a 4' scaffold tube extension! But if you need to buy a breaker bar full stop then yes, I'd go for a 3/4".

I've used shafts from n/a, ABS and petrol in my TDs with no problem.
Mike - joints are indeed available, but first you have to know whether you've got a standard shaft in there or a cheapo aftermarket one - often the latter aren't repairable, and have a completely different kind of joint.
