Throttle damper

Post by Dollywobbler »

The TXD seems to have some sort of throttle damper on it - I recall my Pug 306 had something similar. However, I'm not sure it's working properly. If I release the throttle, it's very slow to drop the revs. In neutral, the revs eventually settle at about 1100rpm, then slowly drop to just below 1000rpm - where it should be.

Is this working 'as designed' or does something need lubing?

Adjustable - yes but method depends on make of pump.

Believe it's a Bosch pump.

i have always just removed these when they fail, i dont think there is much you can do with them as they are usually like a miniature shock absorber,

Sounds simple enough. Not sure why they fitted one in the first place. To try and make it smoother for shabby drivers or to try and maintain turbo boost by not entirely shutting off the fuel?

apparently it meant to bring the throttle to rest slower, something to do with emission control

Ah, that'd make sense. My petrol Bluebird has something similar. Thinking about it, I guess it's to try and minimise unburnt fuel. It's un-nerving though as you don't get instant engine braking!

I thought it was more to do with stall prevention, but I could be wrong. I can't see exactly how it affects emissions though?

BTW, your pump is the Lucas by the looks of things.

My guess is that a quick shut-off of the throttle causes some fuel to be unburnt, or not completely burnt. A gradual close keeps the fires burning a bit. Probably.

Really? Oh well. Can't say I've looked too closely yet. I was offered a Bosch spare - glad I declined it now!
