Well you seam to be missing the point and have done for 20 years it would seam; The red stop light you are referring to isn't just an LHM light it can also signify other problems as per Brians post to help you i.e low coolant & low oil pressure!

To be pedantic  there isn't an LHM level lamp or an LHM Stop lamp. There is the (!) lamp which signifies low LHM level or low hydraulic pressure, and a separate STOP lamp (as you know).

To be completely clear to those who may not know of your experience with BXs, it might have been best to say it was the (!) and STOP lamps (I assume) which came on together, as people often think the STOP lamp is purely hydraulic related hence the pointers in other directions.

(For clarification, the brake pad warning lamp does not bring on the STOP lamp, as I assume it's not deemed serious enough for the driver to have to stop right away).

Depends how bad the pads are Mat, they might not be able to stop even if they wanted to!

Ah OK, I wasn't sure, as I never wore the pads down on the 14, and the wiring on both Timex and the 1st BX I had is shot.

Your reasoning does make sense though, as this feature does work on the GS, and the light comes on before the pads are completely worn out.

Since some people want to be pedantic of what I can see and know I have redone the title of the thread.

All levels are fine, Front Brake pad wear indicators will not work (no wiring to pads), Battery fine, Handbrake fine, coolant level fine.

So yes it is the warning light for the Hydraulics pressure or level which the stop light also comes on for. Handbook says "Stop immediately and call the nearest Citroen dealer."

No leaks evident!

As Mark suggested, how about trying to disconnect the sensor. If that puts the light on all the time (not sure whether it's a NC or NO switch), just short the two wires together. Then if it doesn't do it on the corners in question, it has to be the level sensor - at least you know for sure then.
