Speedo broken

Post by ghaddon1701 »

Hi all,
Could someone tell me why my speedo doesn't work please. There appears to be nothing wrong with the cable. I have unplugged it from the back of the speedo and the cable goes round when the car moves. But the speedo needle does not move when it is plugged in. The dashboard just makes a clicking noise. I haven't had chance to take the dash out properly yet to have a look at the drive in the back of the speedo. I have disconnected for the time being to stop it clicking. Thanks.

Regards Graham

The old grease may have solidified? or something internal has broken & thats why it won't move? The only way to tell is to take it out & see if you can physically see what the problem might be? If you do need a replacement speedo head, don't chuck the mileage drum, its easy to swap over & then your car will keep its original mileage correctly :)

Is the end of the cable you see going round still square?

The speedo needle is not directly coupled to the input shaft but relies on a non-contact eddy-current coupling. And contrary to popular belief it is not the needle that "ticks" but the odometer pawls and gears that are directly driven from the cable.
Does the odometer work? If so, then the needle movement beyond the magnets may be stuck. If not, it is more likely that the cable tip is rotating in the coupling itself.

I've just replaced my speedo unit a few weeks ago because it had given up. If the mileage and trip still work then I would swap the dials for another set. Fixed mine :-). Obviously if you're not getting any distance readings or speed reading then that suggests the issue lies with the cable.

We believe the problem lies with the cable. We think the speedo wen a bit stiff and the cable rounded off. Have greased the speedo and now it turns quite freely with a screwdriver in the drive and the speedo needle moves. So I have ordered a cable. Thanks everybody.

What's more likely is that the nylon ferrule on the cable has moved up and the cable is not fully engaging in the clock. The ticking noise is the end of the cable skipping the corners.
