ZX 1.9 Volcane Diesel-Turbo Engine into a BX?

Post by oilybox »

My question is can it be done, and what parts, (obviously other than the ZX's engine) would be needed?

I'm not exactly Mr techy on this kind of thing but it will be possible.

Immediate first thoughts are it's easier than a Xantia engine because the intercooler is on top of the engine as per the BX so surely it wouldn't need too much thinking about. Obviously you would need to change to a suitable camshaft with a drive for the hydraulic pump but I can't see any real benefit in using the 1.9 over the 1.8 out of the BX as someone who owns both a ZX Volcane TD and a BX TD, unless that is all that is available to you.

Surely a Xantia 1.9TD would be a better bet, same engine but set up to run a hydraulic pump and as Juston says the intercooler is in the wrong place but thats not a biggie.

The advantage with the 1.9 turbo engine is that there are loads of them about, the 1.7's aren't very common these day's :( It also has slightly more bhp but has an increase in torque over the smaller engine & can be tuned as per Matt's to really go rather well without too much trickery or expenditure. I must admit i'm sorely tempted myself, just got to find a friendly engine fitter (probably based in Wales, haha).

This has a little more info - I found (before tweaking) that it gave a more relaxed, lazier engine which would pull a lot better in higher gears.

It's not the same pump, apart from very early Xantias so you'd either need to adapt the hydraulic system to suit, or ditch the Xantia pump and fit a BX pump and camshaft. You wouldn't need to block off the oilway in the head that lubricates the vacuum pump on non hydraulic cars though.

Quite correct its a 6+2 pump, which in plain english means it has a seperate hydraulic supply for the power steering and no FDV.

I had removed this very set up from a late BX LHD vehicle, that I found in a scrapyard sometime ago, with the intention of fitting it to my own BX, but never got round to it.

Whilst it is certainly possible to fit a ZX turbo diesel engine into a BX, the intercooler is somewhat different to the BX version as it does not have the rubber sealing strip to bonnet duct. In fact it more similar to a Peugeot 306 installation in this respect.
