Leaking roof

Post by mat_fenwick »

I seem to have developed another water leak this winter (or rather the BX has) but am struggling to see where it's actually getting in. It's dripping from the edge of the headlining above the passenger seat. It has been parked nose down on a slope, so that may mean it's getting in elsewhere and running downhill towards the front.

Peeling the edge of the headlining back I can see drops on the box section linking the A and B pillars, but not actually where it's getting in. I've moved it into the garage now to let it dry out, and will probably have to take the headlining out to see where it's coming from. Unless anybody has got any bright ideas? I can't see where a leak could suddenly develop from :?

I had a lot of water coming in this way. The seal had completely disintegrated. Piece of bike inner tube
cut to size did the trick.

'Fraid not. I've had a leak there before, but found a NOS aerial on eBay for a bargain, and fitted that with some silicone grease for a better seal. It did cross my mind that it could be leaking there again though, but as it was on a slight side slope would have drained to the driver's side.

Has your welding of the windscreen surround cracked the roof panel joint sealant?

Possibly the roof join under the cappings. If so it will probably leak less if parked with the front higher than the back. One of my tzds was leaking from there, i sealed the cappings and cured it.

That sounds like a possibility Barry. I guess with the flex in the shell the roof seam can open up under the capping. I vaguely remember your thread now you mention it.

I can't it being from the screen welding, as the leak seem to come from much further back. It's possible it's been present for a while but only noticed now I've parked for a while on a slope.

My 4x4 has a leak from the roof also, on the ns, it only leaks if i park it nose down, i haven't decided how i'm going to tackle it because the capping also acts as the gutter. I think these seams leaking are a product of flex due to the lightweight shell.
The tzd i sealed although cured hasn't seen the road since the repair so i don't know if the sealed cappings/gutters are going to be an issue. One option i'm exploring is to fit additional weather strips to seal against the top of the doors because a lot of these are designed to carry the water away. The one fitted to a renault master is perfect in profile but not long enough so i'm still searching. It will help with wind noise too.
