Gear linkage

Post by ace_the_bass »

Happy new year all! After trying to sell my gti last year with no joy I decided id keep it. When I went for a last run in it before tax and mot ran out. When changing gear the gear stick went all floppy and I ended up having the aa out. The guy packed it out and very delicatley I was able to drive the short distance home. The car has been like this since. Got it out the garage for the first time in 6 months and was able to put it in gear and drive it out although it feels very fragile. As regards to fixing the problem correctly does anyone have any idea of what parts are available gear linkage wise? It's a 19 gti if that makes any odds.
Thanks men.
Dave.

The 2 selector rods that most commonly fail are a ball & cup design (similar to rosejoints) and they have a plastic bushing inside the joint. Normally this bushing wears out and the cup becomes loose around the ball.

You'll see them if you look straight down behind your distributor toward the back of the gearbox.

These are easily replaceable with rods from another BX as all the XU's are the same. They simply pop off and pop back on. No adjustment should be required if they've come from a working unit.

I think you need a spare BX bud as i suspect these items are unavailable from Citroen.

Some of the Peugeot uprated ones (Griffiths and the like) use a metal cup with retaining clip. I've adapted some 205 ones onto my BX.....they'll last a lifetime in theory.
