Differences between the BE1 & BE3 Gearboxes

Post by citsncycles »

Since buying Timex, I've been keeping an eye open for a replacement gearbox, as 1st gear Synchro is dead, and the others can be beaten if you shift quickly. So far I've had no luck locating the correct box (BE1), so will either rebuild or have rebuilt the box in there this summer.

I was discussing this yesterday at Gaydon, and as a result aquired a scrap BE3 box toplay with (thanks Brian!) =D> . Before I end up tearing apart a gearbox I can't salvage anything from, does anyone know what the differences are between the 2 boxes. I assume the selectors are different because of Reverse being on opposite ends of the shift pattern, but were there other changes too?

The hope is to strip my BE1 box, fit all new bearings, then reassemble using (hopefully) the least worn parts of both boxes, with possibly some other new parts when necessary and available.
