Leaking FDV I think

Post by BXnut »

Can any one help me. I am loosing LHM but it only seems like when the car is parked. I can drive it from Stroud to Preston and back losing very little but when it's parked up I seem to have a puddle under the front of the engine. It looks like it's coming from the FDV. But I'm not 100%.

From stroud you say? Have you nicked my 16valve?! It does that too! And yes, sunds likely to be the FDV, it certainyl is on my car. Exact same thing, only leaks when it's switched off and the car settles.
That said, best to wash it all off and check the area carefully. It could be the return hose that attaches to the curly metal pipe in the same area, or the PR..

My 16v does that too! The rear end drops within 10 mins so I think the leak is what lets it drop so quickly. Try dropping the suspension to low to relieve pressure in the system. Might save you a small fortune in LHM in the short term.

ditto. Although I find even if I drop it to low it'll still weep if left for a few hours.
Since I have to change the rad in mine then I'll do the FDV and PR whilst I can get to it. A much easier job on any BX that isn't a 16v..

dropping it to low will probable cause it to leak quicker as it sound more like a return circuit leaking

the rear end droping soon after engine off is usually the BX syndrome,
rear susp pressure returning through an elderly dosour valve

Yes, a right PITA with that mahoosive inlet plenum chamber. Annoyingly, it's probably a weeping union, so the actual job would take seconds

Well I'll try tightening the connecting pipes but it looks like it's coming out of either one or two of the 'caps' on the side. It looks a difficult job to do the FDV with new seals. How difficult is it? I've seen it on other posts on here but think it's a bit out of my league. I would give it a go if I had a spare to do it with then just swap them over :) Chicken way I know ;)

As a temporary measure, pop a bowl underneath to catch the lhm & pop it back into the tank before setting off. I think some members have used some epoxy stuff on the seal areas to stop the weeping as they didn't want to go to the hassle of taking off the FDV. It hasn't leaked since.

sounds very much like the usual FDV issue then. There are seals under the caps, you can rebuild them and seal kits are available, it's not a hard job as such, but getting the bloody thing back together, ANd keeping it oil tight is a bit of a faff.
If you can find a goos used one from someone on here that may be less of a headache.

Pleiades in Cambridgeshire still sell rebuilt ones - good if you're in a hurry - they get worse slowly..... finally failed an mot due to it... about £90 with all new seals...

I'd rather do this given the faff of radiator removal etc. Took me a leisurely 2 - 3 hours to do it on my Turbo D, when it was working better a couple of years ago.
Not difficult really.

I should try the sealant technique on the TXD really - then the new owner won't have to worry about it immediately (though to be honest, I've not worried about it during six months of ownership, just laughed at the green snow). Again, the leak seems to be from that core plug area on the side. Any sealant recommendations?

Can anyone please tell me where to find a seal kit for the FDV? My 19TRI has the symptom of losing steering assistance occasionally mid corner. I will do a thorough clean of LHM and filter and hope it solves the problem, but a seal kit would be good to have.
