Defender110 wrote:The 60 and 70 isn't the width/fat it is the percentage of the width which equates to the ride height.

i.e; The ride height of the tyre on a 165/70 would be 70% of the 165mm width = 115.5mm

185/60, 60% of the width = ride hieght of 111mm

175/65, 65% of the 175mm width = ride height of 113.75mm

Generally the taller the ride height the softer the ride and the smaller width giving a quieter ride unless squealing round the bends lol.
Not sure if this was meant for me, but i did know the above :) My post wasn't perhaps that clear, but i did mean the height of the tyre being the 70, 65 or 60 & not the width, anyway's......

Didn't the TZD Hurricanes run 165's when new? They had the 5.5 Speedlines. Perhaps someone with a Hurricane brochure could confirm?

I've never had problems with 185's on estates but most of mine now run 175's as a compromise between looks, ride and grip.

But surely if you are using the alloys off a GTi (5.5J) or the 16V (6J) then you need to use the appropriate tyres as specced for them irrespective of the fact it's a diesel? :?

From the chart above the Alloy Option for a diesel is M which is a 5J. The designated alloys for GTi & 16V are O & P respectively. This surely must change the plan?

The late hatchback model "Pallas" (="Ourane") (Turbodiesel with aircond., Gti Spoiler front and back, front foglights, green-black velours) was delivered with 165/70 tyres and the silver 5.5J alloys of the GTi . Like mine e.g.! :)

Can't remember if I already said, but I ran 5.5s with 165/70s for a while on the back of one of the estates. I didn't have any problems as such, but the tyre profile just looked very, very wrong... So wrong that I'm amazed it was ever a factory fitment.

Anyone ever run wider then 195 ? going to get a set of Michelin 195/65 for my 6J speedlines, on a side note, do people have a preference to one tyre make over another ? Im only going with Michelin as that is what the cars came on when new.

I like vredesteins, miles better than michelins in the wet & a damn site cheaper when i last looked.

I believe that 165/70's aren't ideal for a 5.5j, you could fit a 175/60/65/70 & would be ok, but 165 sounds wrong to me, which KevR has alluded to.

I've got the standard size tyres on Timex, but used to run 175s on the 1st Estate I had, mainly because they were actually cheaper. I can imagine the 165's may look odd on a MK2 with it's wider arches.

165's on a MK2 certainly make the car look as thought its on bike tyres, possibly helps with fuel economy? I think a good compromise overall are 175's, but i think they may be harder to get now than 185's?

175/70 Vredesteins winter and Michelins summer - always looked right on the estate (on steelies) and handled exceptionally well.

I've always run this and my previous GTi's on Michelins and have been very pleased with them compared to other tyres on different cars.

However, I changed to Kleber Dynaxer over a year ago on the BX when changing to 6J Speedlines and although being less expensive they are as surefooted and as a bonus I would say quieter than the Michies.

Most cars of that era had tyres that size. The sierra and cavalier only had 13" wheels until late in life, they were ok for the power they had but 185's are a iseful update and make the car look more purposeful.

My GT and DTR still run 165's
