HP pump priming tip

Post by cauchoiskev »

I was changing my LHM today, and it occurred to me that I had never posted my technique for getting the system working again... all that putting a funnel in the pipe and pouring in LHM malarkey is a right pain if you're on yer tod, and you invariably get a nice puddle of fluorescent green on your garage/driveway floor.

Sooo... don't bother priming the pump with a funnel. Just pull the LHM tank breather tube out of the wing, and blow into it as hard as you can (lazy so and sos can use compressed air). This forces the LHM down the tube to the pump. Then tighten the pressure-release bolt, and away you go ! I've been doing this for years.

..that_ ----------- =D>

a) I always used a compressed air feed (Usually from slow/low pressure feed, 12volt electric tyre inflater/compressor) !

b) I've being doing it this method for @ least the last 20 years !

I've even educated a local 'Citroen Indy' garage this quick/easy method rather than the 'BOL' method !

Usually blow down the breather, although the 3 in use in the fleet have never needed priming manually, they seem to pick up just fine without any assistance..
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

I've always primed the pump & any spillage just helps with rust protection :)

I'm not convinced that LHM gives any rust protection. Quite the reverse, it seems hygroscopic. :(

I thought one of the advantages of LHM was that it wasn't hygroscopic?

Well.......the Mk1 eyeball always detects a lot of damp around the wheelarch strut area after the porous returns of GSF had sprayed their load around. It got to be a regular cleanup but fortunately considerably less frequent now I buy my returns from the stealer. :D

My wheel arches are usually damp too, without any LHM leakage :-P I too remember one of the touted advantages of LHM being that it's non hygroscopic, and I've certainly noticed less corrosion than I'd expect under the tank where it gets a semi-regular dousing.

Of course, LHM isn't what it used to be...

Yes, we only have LHM Plus, which isn't as nice as the old LHM, i wonder what the difference actually is?

I have no idea at all, but I do know from talking to garagists that struts very rarely got sticky with LHM, and indeed from my own memory the entire hydraulic system seemed to be happier on LHM than LHM+
It may also be fading memory or rose timt effect but LHM+ seems to go yellow and shitty in no time at all, whereas LHM stayed lovely and green forever..
