Same here docchevron when the TXD now a called "chugger" by my daughter, lost its rear silencer on the road last year the back part the exhaust system was replaced with single box at the rear. Pretty much a straight through! The additional noise not percievable over the Diesels chugging at idle or noticeable at road speed only thing it "may" and I use that term wisey. Is an increase in performance.

Do I understand from reading further on this post thats not recommended plan for a petrol?

Don't know if it's very different for diesels but the exhaust is a critical part of the system for petrol engines. The engine sends pulses of exhaust gases down the exhaust, which when timed right can help suck the next pulse down the pipe, in turn helping induction. The length of pipe to the first silencer, and it's diameter are critical to when in the rev range this works. Stock systems are always a bit of a compromise with regard to power, noise etc. And can usually be improved upon but if not careful you can go the other way.

I've built a couple of custom systems for vehicles over the years, and you can dramatically change where peak power is developed by altering the silencer position. I built twin exhausts for both a 2cv and a Lomax and managed a decent power increase, although with the 2cv it was at the lower end of the range and it actually reduced the top speed.

I ran my BX 16 Auto for the best part of a year with no centre box and a straight through to the rear box - no appreciable difference in speed (but it was an auto) but a little noisier.
