mot failure rear lights??
just finishing off a few last jobs on 50 shades of red for the pending mot, the prob is with the rear light clusters, when the lights and brake lights are on put the indicators on and the lights and brake lights dim slightly when the indicators flash, this is an mot failure (there is an explanation on the previous failure sheet) the battery is new ish and the alt is at 14.4v it makes no difference whether the engine is running or not, im guessing this is an earthing issue but where would i start? its the same both n/s and o/s.

Re: mot failure rear lights??
The earth points can clearly be seen when you remove the rear lamps. Give them a good clean up and hopefully things will improve.

Also twist slightly the terminals in the light cluster itself to improve contact with the connectors.

Re: mot failure rear lights??
And if that fails my quick repair is usually:
Locate the earth track on the cluster (the only one that connects all the bulbs), choose a piece of it that doesn't pass near any positives and twiddle a length of wire around it (about 12" long).
Then pass the wire through one of the many holes in the cluster and secure the other end under the 10mm earth bolt.
Job done, forever.

That would all depend on how well you twiddle your length of wire

Re: mot failure rear lights??
My 12 inches currently desire absolutely no twiddling.
Had a hernia repair 12 hours ago and i would even decline if Amy "Jesus Wept" Pond was offering!
But, on a practical note, the above method always works, lasts indefinitely and i've got it down to 3 minutes per side.

Re: mot failure rear lights??
If you have the rear lights with this arrangement, then you can solder a good earth wire and attach to the existing earth point on the off side, as shown in the picture below.
And yes it is an MOT failure.
