water hose - can you name or number it?? Got a leak!

Post by tim »

Typical, nothing's gone wrong for months.... still, it's warmed up, the sun is shining etc., so could be worse. Drove six miles from work this p.m., and parked up. An hour later I noticed a small dirty trickle from under the car. Arse. Looked under the bonnet and there was a collection of coolant in the casting wells by the pump so I mopped it up, refilled the half-empty rad and fired up. I couldn't see anything happening as it was cold by this stage, however, when I turned it off and walked round to the open front I heard a faint hissing noise and applying mk 1 ear'ole I traced it to the pipe which I think feeds the engine. When I squeezed it it ejaculated all over me hand, So the question is, what is it called - and even better, if it is available can someone hit me with a part number? (or an alternative if not.... the scrappy one is still in the box). Er.... hi Malcolm..... the hose is the short fat one that comes from the r.h. side of the engine and disappears under the diesel filter housing. coincidentally I tried the bleed butterfly on the adjacent hose in case it had come loose and the little f'er just came off in me hand, so that was useful. I need one of these sections as well now! I will probably be able to extract the broken stub but again, if new is available at a sensible price this would be better. And it could have been worse, if I'd been on a longer run the red light of death might have come on. More of that on another thread soon, for now I need to get a new one asap, as the car gets used every day.

not sure which pipe you mean Tim,
is it the main top rad hose or maybe the short length going from the bottom of the thermostat housing to the metal pipe that runs round the gear box end of the head, and continues behind the engine

can you post a picy,

also is it the brass bleed valve on the stat housing that has sheared off

Sorry, don't know how to do pics. It's a really short length, runs from underneath the filter housing into the engine block. Quite wide diameter but fairly thin and flexy. The bleed tap that's broken is the white nylon butterfly in the top hose. It hasn't leaked as the stub is still in place but I will obviously have problems if I wish to bleed the system next time.

Its the short bit of pipe isnt it Tim?
There is a spare one on the scrappers engine and that looks ok. Reccon you could also get a short length from Lenco.

You can also see the water hose with the bleeder tit too.
Tell me Malcolm, would a piece of hose with the same diameter do and cut to length rather than try and find the right part?
Probably be a lot cheaper and easier to find. Whats the measurement Tim?

the prob with fitting say new section using the likes of heater hose, as its oly very short and has to curve you might find it collapses at the bend,
so for the price the dealer is asking its probably the best option

Thanks, Malcolm! We salvaged the scrappy lengths and used those, they will do for now. The oil leak is from behind the pump pulley (hence the 'fling', though not enough to make the belt slip). I assume this is the camshaft seal, which if you believe Haynes is a simple job. Any thoughts?

If the leak is from the pump pulley, then it's not the camshaft seal - that's the one forther back at the top of the engine, although I can tell you from experience it can make a lot of mess if it lets go!

If the camshaft seal is leaking, then I managed to change that and the cambelt in an afternoon - I wouldn't say simple, but the issues are with access down the engine as opposed to it being complicated.

Mike
i think Tim means the cam seal at the gear box end of the head,

this one is very easy, just unhook the pump belt, undo the pulley bolt and pull the pulley off, prize the seal out and fit the new one,

then bung it back to gether

I can't be sure what is causing the leak, looking at the B.O.L only one seal is mentioned in that area, i.e. camshaft seal, so I assumed it would have to be that, if the pulley doesn't have a separate seal?
