I can only guess that the rear silencer doesn't last as long as the centre one, therefore demand of the centre is less & therefore the price of the less made centre silencer means they are more expensive to manufacture? Supply & Demand economics.

Even OEM exhausts have a variable quality.

I was surprised when I discovered that Vauxhalls produce a high quality exhaust stytem, which is fitted to their new cars in the factory.

Later on, they produce a cheaper aftermarket device to compete on price with quick-fit etc.

They then stop making the quality version. For a while, both types are available from the main dealers.

Then only the cheaper version. I expect all manufacturers do this.

This helps explain why the 1st exhaust pipe on a car lasts so much longer than the second.

I have a powerflow ss exhuast on the Peugeot, it appears to be good metal and nicely welded, but I have only had it a year so too early to tell how long lived it will be.

The 1st OEM pipe lasted 9 years. Even then it was able to pass an MOT.

The Mini's exhaust is the original, not bad for a 11 year old car. Getting it replaced is a bit expensive though, it is cheaper to fit a full stainless one instead.
