More sphere questions

Post by barry badger »

I read the responses to the previous sphere enquiry with interest. I originally ran my 4x4 estate with 500/50/1.40 spheres on the back as recommended by gsf, the rear could be pushed down easily but it returned very slowly and on the road it felt very firm. I did a bit of research and found the correct spheres should be 500/40 with no valve, gsf number n45344. I ran it for a while with these but it still felt too hard at the back. So I then fitted two second hand (but good) accumulator spheres to the rear and it felt much better. This is how i've been running it for the last 12 months.
But I know it should feel better than it does so my questions are:-

Is the gsf part number right?
Would I be better off fitting two brand new accumulator spheres to the rear, 400/62, I think?
Was there a 500/62 fitted to anything?

Accumulator spheres have no damping valve in the neck and so would be equivalent to running a car with springs but no shock absorbers. If you say that the ride felt good with them fitted then either you never get sea sick, or never exceed 5mph. :D I think it is safe to say they were NOT accumulator spheres. I suspect they were just a pair of suspension spheres.

They are accumulator spheres, I took them off bx regulators myself. The 4x4 doesn't have valved spheres on the back. I imagine the damping must be done in the pipework because the spheres are mounted remotely.
I'm tempted to try two of the 500/70 spheres listed in the application table posted by malcolm.

yes Barry looking at the drawing on service citroen,
what would usually be the valve on a corner sphere is in the end of the screw cap/bung, which fits through what looks like a giant banjo union, and screws into the cylinder as a sphere would,

although looking at the sphere in the drawing it does have a valve fitted, below are the two options for rear corner spheres dependent on rp No.

95 564 252
NFP
FRONT SUSPENSION SPHERE + GASK
400CM3 40BARS
- SALOON

5 457 447
NFP
500CM3 40BARS

How amazing! I am sorry, we never got the 4x4 here. That is an interesting solution. Maybe they wanted to isolate the connecting pipework from road shocks?

The sphere listed for the 4x4 is:

BX 4x4 95 564 252 402402 400 40 –

http://citroen.tramontana.co.hu/suspens ... nt-spheres" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

ie no damper. I guess fitting normal spheres would be like having double dampers, or worse. If the damperless spheres for the 4x4 are not available then a pair of new 400cc accumulators would be ideal, but perhaps you could have the pressures dropped to 40 bar, or 55 bar if you prefer a little softer. The standard accumulator 62 is a bit too high.

Better still just get the two accumulators presently fitted regassed to the specs you want.
