Window slow then *clunk* window fast again

Post by RobC »

Hello all

My driver's electric window had been really sluggish since I got the car. I was semi-planning on taking the trim off and working out what was wrong.

Then the other day when I operated it, there was a *clunk* that sounded ominous, but it suddenly started working wonderfully!

Any ideas what's happened behind the scenes? And should I be pleased or worried? :?

Might be worth checking. The driver's window on my BX became very lazy, particularly in cold weather - I assumed that the the motor was on the way out when in fact the metal channel holding the window in place had corroded and eventually stuck open necessitating replacement.

Its easy to remove the door trims if you have the right drivers, typically the screws aint all the same thread but it isnt hard. Then you will get a picture of what could be wrong. A good clean and lubrication with grease n oil will work wonders unless the base runner into which the rollers fit has corroded away. Mk 1s it was aluminium, Mk 2s, steel, hence the problem. However a replacement in aluminium is still available from Citroen main steeler. If its still working then leave it alone.

Is that right? ALl my Mk2s have been steel channels AFAIK, but the low mileage one I was taking bits off the other day had aluminium channels. It was a pampered car that had the air of having been garaged so I'd be surprised if both channels had rotted out and been replaced (although it's possible of course).

I found that the reaon the windows really fail is where the scissors mechanism is pressed together. Eventually the pressing is rubbed away and the two halves separate - at this point you get the noises, and after that the window will suddenly drop into the door as the mechanism comes to bits.

Thats true, the critical point is the connection between the static part and the moving part (where the spring sits). It should be well greased!
If the window has some play, you should replace the mechanism, otherwise you might be suddenly unable to close your window. This happened to me yesterday. When I unscrewed the mechanism from the door to remove it, it fell apart. The outer ring on the moving part that holds the static part in the right position on its pivot point was completely sheared off.

If you replace the mechanism on the driver's door, use one from a rear door (same side as the drivers door!). It is usually much less worn than the drivers mechanism. The only disadvantage is that your window will stop 3 cm earlier on the way down. (The edge is then level with the top of the door lock pin)

Note: The mechanisms of the opposite sided doors are not suitable - they fit, but you can't install the spring and tension the mechanism! (only in the wrong way, as the mechanism is mounted upside down)

How old was your MK 2 with ally channels? I think early MK 2s had the same ones as Mk 1s, possibly the pre facelift models. All my MK 1s have aluminium ones.

The one with aluminium channels was 1989. But I've previously had a 1987 TRS estate which had steel channels...
