Don't you just love parts that don't fit!

Post by Tinkley »

Go for engine change on Athena, ref clutch release bearing failure. Prior to this buy various bits. Clutch - LUK clutch kit advised as correct by LUK technical. Go web shopping fiond good factor etc. Get old clutch off, look at new kit, wrong size!
What? I double checked this item with LUK technical and they assured me 215mm but mine was 200mm. Same problem with GSF, but I caught it, went for new cambelt, your vehicle has a 133 tooth belt. Oh yeah! I 've changed it a few times and its' 113 with white markings. No mate youv'e got that wrong our data says so!. Nice to know B2C engines are now double OHC units!.
What the hell is going on - my VIN number and Citroen build code no longer give me the correct parts with factors. How do you determine the correct part for your vehicle?
Sorry 'bout rant but I wanted to get lump back in tonight.
BTW the Valeo that came out was pretty good about 0.75mm wear if anyone wants a 2nd hand clutch for a 1.6, just a litle
rusty after 4 yrs. Flywheel face v Good so a little light wet and dry over mounts and it will be fine. Oh 62k on the Valeo but its dry and pretty much perfect for milege.

Registration No - I've given them both cars reg - some places esp Citroen dealers - complete VIN (Citroen unique ID not good enough) or we won't even boot the computer for you Sir!. Some are a lot better though.
Reg No is not enough, reminds me of my old Chrysler Sunbeam - steering rack boot, Ah! Sir that's a pre 73 Avenger one - on a 1977 car!.
I might even get on to Citroen as to why all these factors are getting it so wrong. They are generally really good at matching, I had no problem in '09 but now its a nightmare. In future take it off then match the part but its annoying with relatively deep internals like a clutch. I suppose it will be wrong suspension returns or something stupid next!.
Apologies still a bit p***** off right now.

Nothing more annoying than buying a part that you've checked with a so called expert who say's its correct, only to find out its the wrong one. I remember going into GSF for a balljoint, here you go sir, i opened up the box & it didn't look right, asked the chap & he assured me it was as his computer say's so. Put it back in the box & jumped in the car, realised that i had one already in the boot, so thought i would check it, bugger me sideways, the new one was different. So popped back into the shop showing him the correct one & handed back the wrong one & they eventually found me the right one, bonkers????

if you send me the last 8 digits of your chassis/VIN No. i will offer it on service citroen,
to attempt to get you part No.''s

although the last few BX VIN No.'s i have tried have not been recognised,
as i believe citroen are slowly deleting the BX from there data base,

but we can try

the other way if you know your engine code offer that at the factors,

When recently sourcing a new clutch for mine, the local factors (Unity) found that the OE Valeo clutch was still available - some have the opinion that it is better than the LUK.

I fitted a LUK clutch to the TZD in 2011, was no good, will only fit Valeo from now on.

I had fitted a LUK boxed clutch on one Athena in 04. That's the one I've just taken apart to put in new clutch. Looked at clutch - it says Valeo!!! Friction plate thickness after 62k 8mm on vernier. Flywheel perfect face, release bearing fine. Am getting LUK/Valeo from GSF today, thats where the previous LUK/Valeo clutch came from... I suppose it is possible it was reboxed, but I would say it was a case of rebranded, ie LUK make Valeo clutches.
The friction material of the one that came out and the new wrong sized one looks identical to the naked eye. Anyway its so good the unit taken out it can go in the one that failed dismally to release. Will post pics of trauma when bowels entered! Be interesting to see what brand that was, did 65k before failing.

When I worked at QH we used to buy in some friction material from Valeo, and their name was often marked on the surface. We did also re-box clutches, for those it wasn't cost effective to tool up for, so LuK might do the same.

Update. Now have 200mm clutch, this one actually says LUK all over it. 4 springs not 6, very different clipping mech for release bearing, probably less total friction material surface area to old one. I think I'll fit it. When I have done searches for Valeo and LUK equivalent in pictures I end up with pictures of both types!. This one is 2012 manufacture not 2003 so it may well be different.
Thanks Mat, its so expensive to develop some of these materials esp the move to non asbestos etc it would not surprise me if there was some pooling of resources. There are a lot of other industral brake systems too, lifts, cable cars, mining systems etc.

Tried to fit parts this evening. Guess what? release bearing has incorrect width to go on actuating ball joint arm. This ones going back too. Maybe 3rd time lucky. To paraphrase another thread 'Just how fecking hard can it be to find the correct clutch?'

Thanks Tim, I'll try for a Valeo this time!!!.

Hi, the Valeo number should be 006745 (thrust bearing has one metal hooked arm) or 801258 (thrust bearing has plastic tags holding it on, late cars -I think)
The LUK equivalents are 620015306 and 620114800.

We always used to fit Valeo or genuine as they were always lighter than Sachs, etc.

Thanks for those numbers. I've already tracked down the Valeo one, its on order. However the 'hooked arm' release bearing is no longer made/available. Fortunately I tracked down the last one that Neat had in stock No 265172. Bit ironic, buy kit and bin release bearing!.

This is a bit concerning as unless there is a ball joint to fork arm conversion for the BE3 gearbox, its not going to be too long before this stops a car running. At the moment it is possible to get some from France at somewhat greater cost. Thanks to Keith at West Heath for letting me know I had the early type release mechanism on a 91 car. Ironically theres 10 years + of 1.6's using the no longer available bearing and about 2-3 years using the commonly available one.

Yes. KevR but it does not stop LUK Uk technical dept from identifying my vehicle from the reg and VIN as having a 215mm clutch!. Stuck with the sodding thing unless one of you guys wants it at cost. I may not be able to return it as its well after 14 days...

Still changed timing belt today, the crank bolt was a doddle but the HP pump/alternator drives took an hour to get off as they had slowly rusted to the crank. Little by little with a jemmy againt the lower cover bolts until eventually it came loose. Ah 4 years of no use. at least engine turned on teh spanner and felt OK. Old belt was very good nick after 7 years and 27K miles a Dayco from GSF. Similar replacing it.
Plenty of patience and wood blocks etc when dealing with these situations. Idler and tensioner in perfect fettle btw.

NOrmally I'd be interested in a spare clutch but I've just looked and I've got two spare brand new ones and two good used ones on the shelf!
