battery light on wheb engine off...

Post by themildbunch »

Just noticed this today... Fitted a new alternator recently and it charges fine.. around 13.5v and bat light goes out when running.
When engine is turned off though the battery light comes on and stays on... Only disconnecting the small green alternator cable stops this...

Is my new alternator shagged already? Any other tests I should do?

Looks like your alternator has a broken diode, this could also be responsible for the low voltage...

a bad conection between the regulator and alternator body can also cause this

The small green alternator cable is the connection between the alternator and the light on the dash - it shouldn't have a feed when the IGN is off.

Check that the alternator has no bad connections internally as per Malcolm's post.

If that all looks ok then your alternator is likely stuffed - obviously it shouldn't drive the lamp with the IGN off, and 13.5 volts is half a volt too low. If it's a recent purchase then winge at the supplier - if it's a refurbished unit - not all reconditioners are equal. Perhaps let us know where the alternator came from so we can avoid them.

Yes, I should know better! It was an old but unused recon. via eBay so no comeback! Did work fine for a few weeks though - I'll check the reg. connector and charging voltage again before I condemn it..

Just unlucky this time I'd guess.

Because it was around for a while unused it may respond to a good clean up inside - brushgear may have become sticky which won't help.

Steve has an alternator but I'm not sure what condition it's in...

and as far as I know, Malcolm is hoping to collect some things from Steve this weekend before heading to Tilford G-rally. If someone is at Tilford from your area - perhaps Mike - they might be able to get the alternator from Malcolm then drop it off to you - that might all be do-able.

Or...

If you need a new one it may be worth giving Clarkes in Stroud a ring - their prices are pretty good!
