I have the possibility of obtaining a 1989 i think it is 16RE engine to replace my one with worn piston rings and knocking low end.
Mine is the 94BHP 16TZS and i know they had different power outputs over their various different versions, but would this be down to the head and carb setup more than the rest?
I've been advised i'd be best sticking my head on the new block
any thoughts?

Better make sure there are no axe-men about or that it is attached to a guillotine then!maxgreenwood wrote: I've been advised i'd be best sticking my head on the new block

Re: Versions of the 16 carb petrol engine
Hi Max. The Haynes gives the 16 (except TX) as having a B2C (XU52C) from Sept 88. The earlier RE version is supposed to have a B1A/A engine. Personally I would like to see the engine plaque which will denote it for certain. They have different compression ratios, valve timing etc. Someone who knows these petrols a bit better will hopefully chip in some more knowledge.
Note my quote from Vege £1350 +VAT for properly fully remanufactured unit and unlimited mileage 12 month warranty, on my existing B2C engine (XU52C).
Really like the 94hp version personally.

Re: Versions of the 16 carb petrol engine
Hi max
Indeed the head will be different and the carburettor set up, they had 80bhp instead of 94 afaik. They are interchangeable I imagine with the standard ones but I would fit your head etc, I would take the time and get the valve stem seals done at the same time.

Not quite same topic
I stuck the carb off of a BX16RS into a 19TRS engine and noted nothing un toward other than better fuel economy that the 19TZS although I think thats just because the old carb was stuffed and the TZS are both aircon models one an auto as well.

Re: Versions of the 16 carb petrol engine
i'd love to stick a 19 engine in there, but clutch is nearly new and everything else is set up perfectly so i'd rather not mess, different gear ratios too i think.

Re: Versions of the 16 carb petrol engine
Dependent what 19 model you have depends on the gear ratios. The GT is quite short geared and quite high revving but picks up very well! The 1.6 box would fit a 1.9 engine. But 1.9 carb fed petrol engines are hard to find.maxgreenwood wrote:i'd love to stick a 19 engine in there, but clutch is nearly new and everything else is set up perfectly so i'd rather not mess, different gear ratios too i think.

Re: Versions of the 16 carb petrol engine
Not sure if it's the case with these engines, but if different compression ratios were available it's quite often achieved by using different pistons - this is how Citroen did it with the flat twin, and Vauxhall with their slant 4.
