I think i read an article about the engine that could run on tangerine's, it was abandoned as it got gummed up with sticky tangerine pith :( Interesting idea though, but i still think those engines that run on pneumatic compressed air are quite interesting, albeit not powerful enough at the mo to make a family car.

I just smile when I watch esso tankers leaving fawley oil refinery followed by Tesco ones! run loads of cars on all kinds of fuel and I can't say I've noticed a difference. Not even on the dyno. To be honest I think the difference between normal and super isn't noticeable in the 16v either.

Really? How do they explain the increase in violent crime stats? I am sceptical on it although the health benfit of less lead in soil is a plus. We just throw other toxins in the ground instead...lol

Interesting not on this and things have not changed in the last 10 or so years since. The Oil companies lay claim to put their branding on the storage terminals your fuel tankers come out from and even who in the supermarket chains they supply even get the fuel from the same storage tanks, but its the process when they are loaded thats differant as the ganteries have differant additives to the fuel and that is strictly controlled by keycards to avoid the same fuel for esso and tesco in your example. The system is fool proof! I know I worked at the Shell/BP terminal in Plymouth which later became the BP/Texaco terminal. Also it is monitored by those that can slap out big fines for breaching trading standards, It happened once that I know of only a result of the Tanker drivers strike back in 2001. that I am aware of!

Been off forum for a few weeks so playing catchup here, but have a few comments as a result of this thread:

Don't assume that an alloy head will have hardened valve seats! The Reliant I had was fitted with one of those fuel pellet things, but when I removed the head after it dropped a valve the seats were so bably recessed they were almost worn through.

Most older engines have (or had) 'lead memory', ie lead deposits in the seats that would continue to provide the necessary lubricant for (according to some experts) up to 30,000m, depending on how the car's driven.

Modern fuel and older engines - since the introduction of E5 (let alone E10!) every petrol car I've returned to the road after a long layup has needed a new fuel pump within 6 months. You also want to beware cheap fuel line, as it's sometimes old stock and will degrade quickly. I've even heard tell that some older cars (such as my '59 2CV) can run hot and burn valves, pistons etc. due to the higher volatility of modern fuels.

Fuels at different stations - when the new Shellfuel came out I found a small difference in fuel economy with the GS, but only enough to balance out the higher price. I've only used cheaper diesel (with the occasional addition of some veg oil) in Timex, so can't comment, but will probably put some good stuff in for the MOT in the hopes of minimising the emissions!
