gti 8v coil ??

Post by rutter123 »

finally got the gti running today after repairing a previously badly repaired part of the injector loom and a new fuel pressure regulator run lovely and idled evenly with no hunting, took it for a few laps of the block and then it cut out, there is now no spark so i suspect the ign coil is at fault (this is a s/h coil i got from chevronics after i dropped the original and broke the connector block clean off) my question is can i use a "standard type" ignition coil in place of this? i.e the cylindrical type coil pack or is the o/e coil specifically for this ign system? how can i check the coil with a multi meter? there is 12v at the coil but definately a lack of spark.

Possibly more likely a failure of the ignition amplifier :?:

My 16's coil died in the same way. Hadn't used it for a couple of weeks, started it up and got 100yds before it died. Again, no spark but power in.

I also suspected amp but £7.50 on ebay and new coil had it running again.

I suspect that from a technical POV the cylinder type won't work, also the connection for the loom is absent.
I have zero patience for your tedium.

On my 14 the coil failed twice. It's your distributor Sir the RAC man told me - complete tosh. Mode of failure was pulling away, ie under load, from some traffic lights. Turned over, no spark. Similar 2nd time but I already had a spare. The books say coils fail at high speed, but I have only ever had one do that, all the rest (mainly on motorcycles) have failed pulling away from junctions, stops etc.
On the 16 I have now apparently the ignition module failed prior to me buying it. Symptoms were uneven running with persistent misfiring, they really cocked up the carb trying to cure it. Anyway previous owner said it turned out to be module. I've almost got the carb back to standard but will need to check if they've altered the 2nd choke opening timing. It's a spare now.

if you have a timing lamp you can connect it to the king lead ( lead from coil to DIZZY cap ),

this will show if there is HT

been searching the web and this coil pack seems to be fairly universal part no 12303 intermotor part. is this the right coil for this car? fits most efi bx's inc 1.6/1.9/gti injection engines. which i can obtain thru my local motor factors for around £15.

This was the best application list I found with a quick troll.

http://www.ignitioncarparts.co.uk/PartD ... 302&s_vid=" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you have your engine code it should confirm it.

Seems a good site but even with a reg no and engine code you will need to understand what you're buying. For example my engine uses wasted spark under the Bosch 3.1 system and I had to trawl through loads of pictures of other coils and Dizzy's(which I don't have) before I spotted the wasted spark coil.

Caviat Emptor! Perhaps needs a telephone call to confirm you're getting what you think you're getting?
