OK, so dont laugh....
Ive never taken a head from a turbo'd XUD.
Can i take the head and turbo out without removing the engine?
And if so, anyone got any tips for the job?

Re: possibly stupid TZD head question
Yes, you can, but obviously it makes the lump you're lifting out that much heavier.
Tips? Only one that springs to mind at present is to keep one of the old head bolts, cut the head off and put a slot in it. Screw this into the block at the opposite end to the locating dowel and it will keep the HG in place otherwise they have a tendency to slide backwards.
The plastic filter in the turbo oil feed is fragile, and is often missing. Worth cleaning if present, if only for peace of mind. And if you slot the front mounting holes in the intercooler, you can thread on the securing bolts more easily, then lower the I/C into place. I once dropped one on trying to start the thread, which promptly fell into the little access window on the top of the bellhousing. On the same day right after I'd just put the engine in. I swore, loudly.

Re: possibly stupid TZD head question
I did this in Holland in winter and it was forking cold!
Personally I'd remove the inlet and exhaust manifolds first and the head is easier to lift out. Access is tricky to both manifold nuts but is helped massively by removing the top drivers side engine mount ( but place jack under the sump) and the removing the bolt from the lower engine mount and then you can move the engine in situ to give you the extra space. Watch the lhm tank filter head though as it'll ping out and tilt the tank with it spilling lots of green blood.
Problems mate?

Lucas pump, so if it's easier, getting the LHM reservoir out is a piece of cake - no fuel filter in the way.

Re: possibly stupid TZD head question
Thanks for all tips.
@Bandit, yes possibly. Turbo and or feed pipes leaking oil, as is cam cover and also head gasket now becoming suspect as water use is up and no apparent leaks. Also turbo or intetcooler or manifold or something may be adrift somewhere and or cracked as air is audibly leaking with a loss of boost pressure and performance and some horrible over fuelling.
so some fun times
