TD cone filter?

Really? This is what a well maintained*, low mileage* and original* 1.8TD looks like under "tha hood".

Question:

If I want to put on a cone type filter, as can be bought on ebay for not much, where is the wisest place to put it?

I want to BOOST my car's performance. Not really, bit of a pointless mod, but the biblical amount of plumping and crumminess of the OEM filter irritates me.

Thought of two places:

Longitudinally on the front left (in the photo), that's a 60mm i/d tube.

Transversely at the front right, where the existing filter assembly is, utilising the existing transverse air pipe which I believe ends in a 3" o/d.

Anybody tried this before? Ideally I'd like to go front left but there's not much space, I'm not sure of it's suitability to pick up much cold air and it could be a bit fiddly to connect up the oil breather.

I believe the typical placement of a cone filter would be to remove the filter box & have it fitted in that area. Alternatively, just fit a K&N panel filter to replace the standard paper filter in the pre-existing filter box. I do have one available for £25 inc p&p if you're interested? drop me pm

Or just leave it.....it won't make any difference!

..that_ or you should check or just replace the boost diaphragm in your lucas pump - unless it's been changed before chances are it's split or starting to split... can make a big difference to the performance - you can buy an expensive Delphi replacement assembly or just the diaphragm here...

compared to 306 dturbo sites there's not much performance modding talk here but it's mostly been done before - the fueling can be turned up on the lucas pump but it's a bit messy and fiddly - with the lucas it's pretty much up the fueling and boost a safe amount (need a boost gauge)... if you want more you'd need to change to a bosch pump and bigger turbo, I think....

A cone filter may well make things worse! You'll be drawing in warm/hot air from the engine bay rather than cooler air from outside. The hotter the air, the less oxygen you'll be drawing into the engine resulting in a less complete burn of fuel. The hotter air will also reduce the efficiency of the intercooler, which is there to cool the air going into the engine after compression by the turbo!
If you want to try it, use a panel filter as someone has suggested. I run my td with a panel k&n only because I may as well use it whilst my valver is off the road.
Does it make any difference? Possibly, but negligible by itself, a normally aspirated camshaft, a 1.9 turbo bosch pump and injectors will help more. You've then a strong argument to move to the next stage of either a turbo upgrade to a gt15 or even go straight to a 1.9 td engine.

It's okay, this wasn't intended to be a performance mod! I think they look a bit daft anyway, just fancied getting rid of the unnecessary pipework whilst I change the current filter. I don't think mine has ever even been above 2000rpm (the joys of my commute).

if thinking of fitting a cone/power filter, ensure it comes with adequate ear protection, bx diesel are noisy enough why make it any worse, tho the turbo spooling up/down does sound better, my advice dont bother as it will make little or no difference. as above if you want more go then try boosting the pump and turbo up a bit, i believe its fairly easy and there is a clip on youtube how to...with caution..
