Auto box

Post by Phil Brook »

After much waiting my 16TGS has been fitted with a new bottom engine- my mechanic said it was the dogs bollocks!! very impressed. All put together and road tested over about 100 miles. I took delivery and after another 50 miles the auto box packed up. At the moment my mechanic is scratching his head. I noticed that the shift handle seemed to be one out as it were when I drove it but thought maybe this was my imagination. My son however confirmed this. At the moment there is no drive- the car just flipped through a few gears lost power and in Rolls Royce terms ceased to proceed! Am I looking at a new auto box? Anybody have any ideas what may have happened? I was looking forward to saying how everything is wonderful - the engine is superb and recommended to me from this site - Bugger!

Has the kick-down cable snapped perhaps? It does more than kick-down and when mine went there was 'chunks of emptiness' in the drive.

(Mine actually snapped in the throttle quadrant so it was not immediately obvious apart from the symptoms.)

Have you found out an answer to this problem? - I know nothing about auto boxes apart from they are t***s when they break.

To test the kick-down cable can you just disconnect it from the engine & pull it to see if it does anything? (if I remember rightly the gearbox should click when the cable comes out & stops).

When my auto box went it wouldn't go up gears & jammed up & made a nasty grinding noise if it tried thus stopping the car on its nose! Then it just lost drive completely, but it would still go backwards. (just out of curiosity has anyone got any idea what went wrong with mine)?

Still out of action I'm afraid but my mechanic is 99% sure its a torque converter problem. Anyone know the best place to get one of these

Its the same box as shared with alot of Peugeots (205/309 and 405) as well as the ZX I expect if that helps.

Alan Goodyear has a couple of automatics for breaking.

Ratios may be different but the basic box design went on to be used in both the ZX and earlier Xantias.

Does the reverse gear work? If it does, the box has gone broken like 97% of all others. These have been fixed, as all boxes face this problem as they get driven enough. It's the sealing of the governor or something like that, it's the last part that comes out from the box when you dismantle it.
Renewing needs changing some bronze bushings. It's like 10 years since I tried to study the case, but found a donor car, went 80 000 km OK and now I'm having the same problem, no forward gears..

I have the factory repair manual for the ZF 4HP14 in case you need it. Also information on fixing the unit but it is in finnish :/

JT Automatics in Kent were the only people I could find to fix my 480s gearbox a few years ago. It was a ZF4HP-ssomethingorother.

I know they are a million miles from you. I mention it just incase you were thinking of sending the box away separately from the car. I had the 480 trailered from Cambridge, without me, and they received it and got on with the job. I was impressed and skint at the end.

The car worked great.
