Help, no crank no start issues.

Post by patersom10 »

So I replaced the head gasket on the 16v, was running without fault until the gasket went.

Since replacing having no crank no start issue.

Have replaced plugs, dis cap, starter motor, earthing seems to be fine. Oh and a new battery.

It has been stood for six months so I guessed could have seized, engine won't turn by hand.

Now what are my options?

Have you got the timing set right? Sounds like it's locked up?

Have you left any locking tools in the engine at all from when you did the job?

It's easier to turn the engine by hand with the plugs out, so try that first.

Another thought: I fitted a starter relay to that motor so you might want to check the small red lead going from the battery +VE to the relay (by the rear washer bottle) make sure it hasn't come adrift after changing the battery, otherwise there'll be no positive feed going to the starter solenoid!

You should still be able to turn it over by hand with the plugs in, it's just easier with them out.

Do you get a 'click' when you turn the key, or nothing at all?

If you're just getting clicks its an electrical issue, nothing to do with timing. Sounds like battery's fecked or it's got a poor earth to me. Possibly the starter motor too....if the solenoid bolts have worked loose that'd cause it.

One click, solinoid working, contact/starter motor not. Lots of clicks solenoid trying to work but current failing. Could be as simple as a a loose starter. Choice to prove is jump from starter casing to earth battery. If not cured, live jumper to solenoids botty. Might need a long screwdriver as a probe to do that. Either works or not then. All assuming the engine goes round. If that might not be possible, then the starter cannot prove itself in position, so remove compression plugs heater or spark or starter. Proven starter, from then rotation has to be mechanical and not an inadvertent fluid lock.

I assume the clutch has not corroded on and the car is 'in gear' or something.
