Wrong gearbox transplant...

Post by JayW »

Does anyone posess enough information to foretell the effects of fitting a Valver gearbox to my 1600?

I need to change it before it deteriorates any further and the only spare i have is the Valver one. Having the Athena one re-conned is low in the current financial priorities list.

The Valver will be sporting the 6-speed i have when it eventually hits the road in 2020

It'll drive exactly the same as a valver, as regards the revs per MPH (maybe a few mph out give or take with rolling radius, but not enough to notice).

Drawback is you'll be screaming on the motorway, but you could pop a TD 5th gear on it to sort that. I can't see a problem, though the clutch is different on the 16v so you wanna make sure the input shafts are compatible so the 1600 clutch fits.

Seconded about the clutch. The 1.6 you have uses a Ø200mm clutch and the 16v a Ø215mm one. The mounting bolts are a different PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter) so you can't fit the 16v one to the 1.6 flywheel. Pity LUK technical don't know the difference.......

I'm aware of the clutch difference, i'll be able to use the 1600 one fine.

I was more concerned about gearing. I currently get 20mph/1000rpm (give or take) in 5th.

Instead of my valver box i managed to pick up a cheap low-miles n/a diesel box from a ZX, hll of a difference!

So if you need a new one anyway and you're not a purist, well worth it!
