Post by rutter123 »

It's best to buy replacements from the Citroen Dealer which are still available and last well. It's a false economy to buy the crap replacements from GSF which usually degrade before the next MOT! The real ones aren't actually that much dearer. :)

Agree with W2G, but pipe bore is around 4 mm if you're stuck.

Just for the record, I changed a strut return in July and fitted a GSF one I had in the workshop and it was finished by December!. Wow 3k miles and the warning LHM light comes on.... I'm not even bothering with the GSF warranty, I'll just get a pair of correct grade rubber ones from Citroen. Very disappointing, by far the worst quality return I have ever had.

Thanks for the part No's Malcolm. I tend to reuse the clips as they don't get damaged on removal or refitting. Got a couple of spare ones too as GSF sold me those as part of the 'job'!.

I'd reiterate the above - I'll be off to the dealer tomorrow for a couple of these for Fred.

Incidentally, I was talking to my local motor factor yesterday (who seems to have most of what I need on the shelf!) And he told me that although they sometimes get gasket sets etc from GSF, they only use them as a last resort as they can generally get similar or better quality parts for less these days.

What's the adjust coller and is it needed at the same time as the hoses when replacing?

its the leg pipe stainless steel retaining strap/clip, it pays to have then to hand as the old one can become damaged on removal

However if you squeeze the collar (S/S Clip) from behind with a large F clamp, you can slide the catch part up or down and off the retaining hook part. Therefore it is not damaged, personally I have found they are perfectly reuseable though I have a spare set as GSF sold me them as 'Yes, you'll need those mate' type of deal. So if you are gentle and do not change the main geometry of the retaining latch part it is reuseable. If you bend it out of shape, a new one is your best bet.

I replaced one of mine when it was cracking slightly. I got one that was poor quality & 6 months & 5 miles later it had snapped! The old one was still in better condition!

I can never get the metal clip to go back on, so I used a cable tie & the metal plate to hold it on.

There is at least one thread somewhere in the technical section which has guides to replacing the S/S clip. My own method is get a 500mm F clamp and with a wood pad on the brake disc, and the other end on the 'square' (of the clip) behind the strut part, wind it on until it (the rubber) is compressed enough to either release or reseat the clip ends. With a screwdriver and fine nose pliers this is usually pretty simple. Be careful not to force anything and just 'feel' the tensions a little, if everything is seated correctly it is quite easy.

There is also the correct tool which is more like a part circular strapping device. Us 'bodgers' devise our own modes when needs must!. As long as one is considerate of the materials involved and not a brute, mostly some way can be found to simulate a factory or specialist tool. Not always though.

as has been said before in threads regarding this clip, use a slightly modified pair of

http://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-Carpente ... m/p/167710

just grind the jaws to a thinner/sharper edge do they go under the clip latch
