Driveshaft question

Post by rd27 »

The driveshaft on my n/a diesel has a knackered cv joint and boot, looking on eBay it may be cheaper (and easier) to replace the whole shaft with a new one. Which driveshafts are interchangeable? There seems to be loads on there for petrol models.
Thanks

Someone will be able to tell you, but if you get really stuck then you could get the wrong one and knock the CV joints off and use them on the existing shaft. I expect a lot are the same. If anything is different it will be shaft length only, I would have thought.

ps.

quite often the CV joint will knock if the gaiter has split/leaked its grease out,

it is usually worth trying a new gaiter after striping and cleaning the original CV joint, and packing it with fresh grease

I had the rear O/S CV joint on a Granada started making serious graunching noises - removed the metal debris and re-packed with grease as a temporary measure - and never had any more trouble with it

I had the same on my tzdt n/s driveshaft recently, got one off ebay £35 inc p/p think from driveshafts uk?? based somewhere in the midlands arrived next day.

tried the repack with grease approach but only lasted a week or so, you will have to remove the driveshaft regardless of which procedure you take, for the money and time saved its gotta be easier and less time consuming to change the whole shaft in my opinion, the above can also supply oil seal if req.

But if the old one will go again, repair and stick it on the shelf ready.
