Alternator swap
Alternator swap
Any issues that anyone can think of with using the Alternator from a 19TZS aircon model to replace the alternator in my TXD (diesel)?

Re: Alternator swap
Nope, I've done the opposite before. Worth checking pulley sizes just in case the diesel one has a smaller pulley, to spin faster at a given engine speed. But don't think so. Petrol ones are higher output IIRC, AC ones (if original) more so.

Re: Alternator swap
i have an alternator from a 406 petrol on my tzd turbo pulley size was pretty much the same and 5 rib, fitted nicely and 100amp rated, i would imagine one from an aircon model would be higher output than non, does it matter? prob not, mines been running fine for a few years, also found the headlights better with the bigger alt.

Re: Alternator swap
Thats the main reason for doing a swap rather than messing around getting the Alternator repaired. I have two alternators on the bits shelf one from a 16RS and this one from the 19 TZS which was recond under my ownership.
Last year when I got a new battery the voltage was a bit iffy and the lights tend to flicker under load and now we are back to the going to work and home in the dark situation here I kind notice it especially after driving the wifes Mitsi to work the other morning. Kind put my headlights to shame
It was the ampage I was more concerned with I guess bigger output wont matter?

Re: Alternator swap
No, the battery (and other equipment) will only draw the current it needs to so no risk of overcharging.

Re: Alternator swap
You do need to check the pulleys if it has a ribbed drive belt as they come in different widths for different out puts, obviously the thinner belt would be ok on the wider pulley but not the other way round. This picture is from when I changed the alternator on my TZD, I had to fit my old 5 ribbed pulley as the newly supplied one was only a 4 ribbed pulley.

Re: Alternator swap
Most of the power that is taken from the battery to start the car is replaced in the first few minutes of running. That is normally the time when most power is taken via the alternator belt so if you have a higher power alternator then the load on the belt is increased at that time.
Just make sure that the belt is tightened well to avoid any slipping / squealing.

Re: Alternator swap
Confirmed on both spare alternators I have they are both 4 ribbed pulleys so thats not a problem.
Also discovered that the TXD alternator is rated at 50amps and so is the spare I had for the 16RS it came from. As for the TZS alternator well nothing obvious on the casing.

Re: Alternator swap
The second one is likely to be the most common 50 amp as well - the next standard size up is 80 amp and they usually have 5 rib pulleys.
