Knackered gearbox - anything worth saving, or scrap it?

Post by KevR »

Like it says in the title really. TZD, fifth gear disappeared, stripped the shaft not just the gear, so basically scrap. 200,000 miles on it as well.
It's earmarked for the skip tomorrow unless anyone can give me a good reason why I should keep it for bits, given that a: I've got another spare, and b: they're not exactly uncommon things here in France anyway.

Assuming it is going to the tip, anything worth rescuing from it first? All I can think of is the reverse light switch and maybe the plastic speedo drive housing.

I am just going through this scenario too. I have rescued the clutch release arm and the plastic sleeves. The orings in the gearbox housing for the top selector shaft and the sleeve and seal from the clutch input shaft. They are all quick and easy to remove.

I have leaks from all these places on a gearbox in use at the moment and plan make it oil tight one day.
The Joy of BX with just one Citroën BX to my name now. Will I sing Bye Bye to my GTI or will it be Till death us do part.

Ta for that - the plastic clutch shaft bushes are knackered unfortunately, and they're so cheap new anyway it's hardly worth the bother, especially as I've never actually managed to remove the locking bolt and get the clutch pivot arm off anyway! Might have to have a go though, as it's obviously a good idea to have the input shaft seal and housing, which can't be rmeoved without removing the pivot....
