door card membrane / sound deadening

Post by themildbunch »

I need to strip down some doors on my BX and other interior areas for some welding soon and remembering the state of the door membrane wondered what's a good product to use to replace my cut about one?

While I'm at it - what are some good, but not dynamat priced panel deadening / noise insulating material that could make the cabin a bit quieter?

Fablon or just plain polythene sheet works well for the door membrane. Silicone rubber can add weight to panels and reduce flex at corners but make sure not to block any drainage routes: if it's around or near to any electrics then use a neutral cure. I've not had any problems with the normal acetoxy cure silicone elsewhere - bodywork / gaskets etc.

I understand self adhesive lead flashing is an excellent panel deadening material, in fact I know someone who buys it and repackages it as a sound deadener and sells it on at a great profit margin.

Had the same problem when mounted rear power windows on my BX. If we are talking about same thing, sound deadening material is called "termosilent"(http://www.laminat.co.rs/wp-content/upl ... dloga4.jpg) and is about 2 mm thick. The good thing is, that same material is used as isolator under the laminate and price for 4 square meters is just under 4 euros. It can be glued to the door with Henkel universal glue - http://www.electrotools.gr/1096-2244-th ... t-125g.jpg, as it doesn't burn trough. Here is how it came out on my rear doors:

Yes, thanks - I just remembered about laminate underlay. I'm sure I read that one this forum somewhere years ago... You can get a big roll from Ikea very cheaply...
