Sudden excessive oil consumption t/d

Post by rutter123 »

On checking the oil yesterday i found the the level to be on the lower end or just below the lower mark, 4k since the last change, never really had excessive consumption like this only ever needing a small top up ( 0.5 litre at the most ) between services every 6k. Topped up with just over 1.5 litre to bring it back up to level. I have been doing a fair bit of motorway 300 mile round trips on a regular twice weekly basis, thete are no signs of any leaks i guess its going out the exhaust? Mileage 272,000. Last change @ 268,600 so burning approx half litre every 1000 miles tho the car seems to be running well with no issues apart from this.
Is this normal for a high miler?

My old high mile car had a weakening turbo. I assumed the oil was going through there. Changing down to overtake was something like a navel destroyer putting out smoke to screen a capital ship. No one could 'follow through' my overtake, as they were driving in about 10 foot of visibility. Rather good fun, actually. Suffocating motorcyclists, probably finding the hedge as consciousness departed. The odd disabled pigeon or crow, and smutty faced sports car driver. The Sioux representatives, visiting, reported it as the most complicate message seen in Europe. 'White man drive forked car'. It was this slight clue that makes me suggest it was a worn turbo, but I do not know that it was. My car, likewise, had no exterior leaks and ran reasonable well enough otherwise.

Are you sure it's not dripping out of one of the cam seals? The HP side one tends to flow down and along the rear edge of the cam cover and then collect around the cambelt lower cover...quite a bit can get down there before you see drops, IME. I've found on both of my XUD's the HP side tends to be worse and I've done both of these recently - easy job though.
Looking at some recently pulled TD engines it's amazing how much oil can gradually leak and accumulate everywhere around the engine over time!

I'd get someone to follow behind you and look for white smoke coming out of the exhaust whilst the turbo is on boost. White smoke would indicate a failing turbo.

p.s. Also worth checking the obvious, like the sump plug and the sump itself.

I suspect the turbo too, lots of smoke under hard acceleration, moreso in the "on boost" range 2200-3500rpm tho no obvious noise from the turbo. Smoke is more grey/soot than white but certainly chucking out a lot more than the norm. Think its a kkk will check.

Certainly sounds like the turbo is FUBAR.
