Hazard etc lights not glowing

Post by Tinkley »

Someone must have had this. When I turn on the lights, usually the 4 console switches glow dimly. However the side light warning light on the dash hasfailed and I don't get the glow on the switches, though they all work. Presumably the sidelight (behind dash) bulb is part of the circuit and replacing it solves problem? Or is there some other demon at work here? Maybe the light stalk/switch?

Sounds like the bx electrical gremlins have arrived, usually bad contacts or ground, think it will be binacle out to solve this.

I doubt it is the dimmer rheostat - the normal dash bulbs can be brightness adjusted fine. I have got quite a few small lights gone ie on dash, behind heater control, cigarette lighter ring etc but over a long time rather than in one hit. Least these later MK2s' are a bit easier to get the binnacle off as they have plastic wing nits unlike those sodding steel things on the 1.4 (1988), which were a true pain. Also need to fix the heattre blower control as it seems stuck in one position - most likely the contact has half destroyed itself on the backing control board...... least the blower does work!

The bulb in the back of the instrument panel I would assume would be the bulb itself. I have seen this fail many times. However the ones around the side I have never seen fail, just go black with age. Have you checked all the fuses? And, is there anything else that has also gone off?

I have never traced the wires back, so don't know what they connect to.

Hope that helps.

Yes, the dim dip does not work, has not since car got rear sub frame mount welded. Now the side lights 5w ones do not come on either so I'll have to investigate for MOT (Dec) as it will pass without the dim dip which is either the relay or the 'tin can' device o/s front wing. I got the car back on the road in Jan and so far have probably done about 7-8k this year. Need to catch up a lot of small but niggling faults before weather gets bad.
Some paint, glass, sunroof leaks, usual stuff. Fun with the rear arms as the brake pipe feed screws won't budge ...yet. I anyone knows of a 6 point 7mm flange spanner...or self tightening type....

The fuse box/relays seem to be almost permanently saturated, maybe the hreater matrix? or sunroof, I just leave it down and draining at the moment. It is NOT the washer bottle area coroded and anything there has been dealt with.
