Taillight Fault

Post by kiwi »

Faultfinding help required please

My 19TRS has developed a fault in the main rear light light cluster where the tail light in that cluster does not work yet the opposite side (drivers side) works.

Seems simple enough have you checked the bulb! Yes. And I also replaced the light cluster and same situation.

This is whats got me perplexed because the power supply to that cluster if broken should prevent the opposite cluster from working yes?

I tried following the wiring diagram to no avail. Can someone tell me what plug pin supplies what on the light cluster? We are talking standard none smoked lens cluster which as you know has fog and brake light locations switched around. Ideally knowing what pin the tail light is will help hugely for a potential bypass.

Do you have a towbar and electrics fitted? the fault could be in the towing socket.

You probably spot on with that! I checked the Earth even swapped with the other cars to confirm.

There was no live feed coming through the pin to the light. So I took off the wire for the towbar then spliced in to the opposite light feed. Cant hurt I am thinking. Yes a temporary fix.

I suspect that you have a break somewhere in the loom that links the n/s to the o/s, this is a separate part of the loom that runs along the inner boot panel usually suffering from a bit of corrosion to the pins on the plugs. I too have had problems with the rear lights due to scotch locks on the towing electrics causing the wires to break, just a case of cutting it all out and re-soldering the joints with some heat shrink. Towbar now removed and all is well. I have also re-earthed the rear lights direct by taking a wire from the chassis to the bus bar on the lamp holder itself bypassing the plug, this also cured the tail light dimming slightly when the indicator was on (an MOT failure)
Im pretty sure somewhere i have a good spare n/s to o/s rear light loom if you need it will gladly ship it to NZ.

That would be an easy fix if it was the loom that links via the boot. Problem is which I think has been lost in translation is that it IS the main Loom aka the one that has the 3 plugs! Fuse box side the car known as the nearside to all us right hand drive owners.

Thanks the offer I have a spare loom in a pile of wires in the shed from the TZS. Its a weird fault! Then again as the cars get older the weirder the faults get.

Incidentally this same car has been parked up last several months! Would not start very easy, cut out etc. Then before our winter decided not to turn over at all! I put that down to damp (being outside). Well I took a punt on changing the Coil and bingo she now starts first time every time. Just shows you how weird things can get and the obvious not so.
