Pipe-flaring tools

Post by Oscar » Wed Apr 12, 2006 4:30 pm

Do I need a pipe-flaring set? Machine Mart sell a kit for J30 or so, and I know Pleaides do one. Is it worth buying?

I suppose a more relevant question is "Do I expect to fabricate my own replacement pipes soon?"

When can we expect to have to make up new pipes for the car?

Pipes are available from Citroen/GSF which are pre-shaped to fit and I assume will be the coated type. So why bother trying to make your own?

But if you could afford a set, you'd be driving something better than a BX!

MMM shiny tools, but really Oscar the genuine citroen ones arent dear and they come pre bent which sometimes gives handy clues at to where they go.

I think the Machine Mart kit will flare brake pipes on conventional cars and will not produce the olive type flare required for Citroen hydraulics.

Jeremy that's a really good point - they produce a conical flare, not an olive flare.

I was looking into the possibility of making my own pipes recently, anticipating the possibility of an MOT pipes failure.

Some tool vendors do cater for the special Citroen flares and pipe sizes, for example
http://www.bennetts.com/tools/vehiclese ... ntId=41965
http://www.bennetts.com/tools/vehiclese ... egoryId=47
These prices seem a bit inconsistent, £5.65 / 3.5mm, but £40.79 / 4.5mm ??? I wonder if the expensive one includes a flaring kit ?

One problem is that the 3.5mm CuNi only seems to come in 50m rolls at about £65. Does anyone know if it is available anywhere in the more usual 25 foot roll at about £8 as for ordinary brake pipe ?

It seems that you need not one but two of the little square flaring tools, one for 3.5mm and one for 4.5mm. Are these actually made by Citroen ?
If so, does anyone know the p/n and price ?

Here are some GSF prices:-
N65972 BRAKE PIPE-50M ROLL ROLL OF 3.5MM HYD PIPE FOR CITROENS 50M 65.00
N65974 BRAKE PIPE 25M ROLL 4.5MM HYD PIPE FOR CITROENS 54.00
N65950 BRAKE PIPE BX FRT TO REAR BRAKE PIPE 12.50
N65964 BRAKE PIPE-REAR LH BX REAR CURLY BRAKE PIPE LH 6.00
N65966 BRAKE PIPE-REAR RH BX REAR CURLY BRAKE PIPE RH 7.45
N65956 BRAKE PIPE BX FRT TO RR BRAKE RETURN (NO ABS) 11.00
N65958 BRAKE PIPE BX FRT TO REAR RETURN (WITH ABS) 10.50

My pipe flaring tool came from Pleiades. No idea how much it cost though as my good lady bought it me for my birthday :D

Pleiades also sell pipe in pretty much whatever quantity you want.

Nice photo Ian.
They cost £54 each at the moment. Costly little devils aren't they !
One of them went for about £24 on eBay a few month ago. Somebody got a good bargain !
Is it difficult to use ?

I take your point but these things are made in very small quantities. They probably take on average about 2 hours to make each one, plus the tooling costs, plus the material costs so in all i dont think 54quid is too bad when you consider my local landrover dealer has just cracked the 100quid mark for an hours labour!
