Broken strut return pipes but not leaking LHM?

Post by greenstuff »

Hi all

I'm working on a 1984 14RE which has three of the four strut return pipes broken. Obviously they need replacing, but I don't understand why the car isn't leaking huge quantities of LHM when it settles down after use? One of these broke on my 19RD estate a while back and there was green stuff everywhere!

Any ideas please?

Maybe the estate had leaky internal seals so was sending too much via the returns??

?More info and pics on the '84 14RE please! I have very fond memories of LRF (Little Red Friend) who was was my '84 14 which I sold to a good home a few years ago.

As James has said.

The returns are just leak off pipes for any LHM that bypasses the seals. If the struts and seals are in good condition there will be minimum leakage / bypass. If your seals are foobarred then you will have a flow of LHM.
