Long Lasting Pipes?

Post by Gareth Wales » Sat Aug 27, 2005 7:48 am

Has anyone tried painting (maybe smooth Hammerite) new replacement pipes, to give them some extra protection?

No need. The replacements will outlast the car. If you're that fussy, buy kunifer pipes.

I always "paint" the pipes with a mixture of old gearbox oil with just a squirt of diesel whenever I'm under the car. I also treat any patches that look likely to rust in the same way.
The diesel helps the oil to spread and creeps into corners and even gets into the pipe clips.
I did my MK1 over 5 years ago when I repiped it, and yesterday I was underneath giving her the annual service and pre MOT check round and the pipes and everywhere else I'd used the oil treatment is just as good as it was then. :)
They think it's all over, it is now!

Pipes

I agree with Ken and Tom.

Replacement pipes and pipes on cars post 1989 or thereabouts are covered in black plastic stuff and rarely give trouble.

If Your car has the unprotected steel pipes, a re-pipe at some point is inevitable. This is one of the big killers of pre '89 BXs.

The pipes often fail where they cross over the rear crossmember,
and are not very accessable here so aftermarket protection is tricky.

At least the pipes are cheap.

Fussy Tom? Moi - I don't think so. All my pipes are plasticated except for the two I've got to replace! And the new Citroen pipes are plain metal
Many thanks to you all

They're said by Citroen to be "steel"

Oh don't take any notice of that. They say the same thing about BXs!
