Well Hello!
I'm thinking of getting a bx, and even bought an old brochure off e bay, but i've lost it! It'd need to be able to tow a caravan that i've just bought a share in (don't ask!), so does anyone know the maxium towing limits of the 1.6, 1.7d and 1.9d? I've spotted a k reg 16 tgs near me, but it'll be no good if it can't tow enough. Other wise i'd have to buy diesel i think.
Cheers,
James (big boy tep)

Hi James and welcome onboard. I've no idea what the towing limits are but my mum has had a couple of BX16s and when driving on your own the're fine but with 3 or 4 passengers they tend to struggle a bit.
I've towed a caravan with a 19d but this particular 19d died if it even saw a hill.
I've also towed with a 17td and that for me would be the only solution to towing. I'm sure other members will contribute to this discussion.

They think it's all over, it is now!
On paper 1300 kgs (braked) for the BX - pretty much accross the board. In realiy 85% of the cars weight would be judged as a good maximum.

Make sure the brakes and clutch are in good order. make sure the towbar isnt rotten, make sure you have good visibility and your outfit is in good order too (brakes, body, chassis etc).
Personally with a 1.6 I would be loath to go above 1000 kgs
EDIT:
Just out of interest the Xantia will pull 1200Kg, the ZX 1150Kgs and teh lowly AX 600kgs. Citroen also seem to be having a Giraffe about the C5's towing weights. 1000Kg for the 2.0Hdi - I dont think sooooo

the Max weight for the BX as im aware is 1120kg, bloody weird number and im not sure how thats calculated but that is BRAKED which a caravan should be!
However dependant on your age you might not be allowed to tow a trailer over 750kg regardless of towing capacity and brakes, i think it was January 1997 that the laws changed so you need a licence older than that!
Having done a reasonable amount of BX based towing i suggest you REALLY need the turbo or the GTi/16v variants, these make towing 750kg weight reasonably easy so shouldn't struggle with the slightly higher weight. I've towed a 1.5tonne caravan (very old pretty laiden and a bit of a guess) a couple of hundred yards with a 1.9NA and while it coped it wasn't happy got hot and struggled on a slight incline, so i'd suspect towing to capacity with a small (<1600) petrol is right out!
You'll also want to get wider wheels on the car as i've found 185's instead of 165's tend to save from a lot of trouble!

That is an odd amount - thats about 85% of the weight of an estate version, so the saloons at about 1090kg kerb weight should be less than that (im using various towing pages for info here - will have to wait till I gets home to look @ my handbook).Vanny wrote:the Max weight for the BX as im aware is 1120kg, bloody weird number and im not sure how thats calculated but that is BRAKED which a caravan should be!
Bear in mind if you have a bump/ crash the police use the manufacturers quoted maximum weights as a guide to see if you were stupidly overloaded (like the time i picked up Vera on the low loader).

2024. TxD 1.9D estate. 'Wheelybin' - x 12
You are forgetting the 4x4 Tom.... Anyway urn to page 78 of your handbook......
1.4BX - Max towing weight 1000 KG (braked)
1.6 - 1.9 (petrol and diesel) 1100 KG (braked)
Thats Citroen official figures - so in the event of your carvan pulling the car over so long as it weighs no more than this, you can show it plod and he aint going to do nuffin!
Now then, the Caravan Club recomend 85% of the cars kerb weight (not loaded to the gunwhales with paving slabs, but the car plus tank of fuel)
Kerbweights are given as:
1.4 TE & TGE 900KG
1.6 TGE & TGS & TZS 950 KG (Estate 990 KG)
1.9 (petrol) TZI & TZS 995 KG (estate 1045 KG)
1.9 (petrol) GTi 1025 KG
1.9 (petrol) 16v 1045 KG
1.9 TZI Estate 1070 KG
4x4 Saloon - 1105 KG
4x4 Estate - 1145 KG
4x4 GTi - 1165 KG
1.7D TGD - 990 KG
1.9D TGD - 990 KG (estate 1037KG)
1.9D TZD - 990 KG
1.7TD TGD - 1025 KG
1.7TD TZD - 1025 KG
1.7TD TZD Estate - 1077 KG
Thus use your calculator and work out 85% of the above for your car.
Tah Dah :fanfare:
(So thats 990 KG for the BX 4x4 GTi, and 765 KG for the 1.4 TG)

80MPH on the motorway, no problems at all!sleepy0905 wrote:I have towed a 750 Kg trailer tent with my 1.9D non turbo with no problems and it romped up hills like it had a rocket up its bum infact you hardly noticed the extra weight.
These HP diesel cars are bloody ace towing machines, and I will call you Noreen if you say they are not.
