Diesel starting issues, another tip to add

Post by finishthat »

Yesterday my TD refused to start, just the tiniest splutter but no life.
checked the fuel line, its a clear one, no bubbles.

I guessed the cut off solenoid, picked one up today and that was the problem.
It had failed at the tip, part of it had come away and was blocking the feed.

So even though I had tried to hot wire the solenoid it was not going to work.

Be wary when you take one out, the plunger and tiny spring are loose parts
and could get lost.
From the way that the rubber tip of the plunger had come off it was clear that it was a gradual failure, so it may be worth checking on a new car, if
the tip is hard, starting to disintegrate , then expect to replace.

Interestingly my TZD has recently taken to running on for a few seconds after the ignition is switched off, I think its a case of the solenoid sticking, probably due to residue from the Biodiesel. Historically a 19RD I had developed the habit and as Finishthat says the tip of the solenoid plunger was damaged, that car failed to stop too and would run on indefinitely needing to be stalled or stopped with the lever on the (Rotodiesel) pump.
